I found this stunning bread bowl in zurich "gib uns heute unser taglich brot" translates to "give us today our daily bread". I'm always searching for similar bread boards, but have never found one like this. I'm not sure, but i think it might be a communion bread plate known as "paten" to display and hold the sacred host during communion services.
Usually with bread boards used in the home, there are many knife marks and scars. However, this one has no knife marks, so i believe it was only used only for serving. I've found communion chalices but never a paten (if that is what it is). The turned wood is a lovely caramel color with it's original varnish finish. The back is signed with the initials of the maker, who carved the intricate letters of the prayer in gothic lettering and the wheat sheafs. There are no cracks or issues that i can find, only slight wear in the center and few small marks of wear as expected with use and age.
The 1st , 4th, and 5th photos are best for color. The 2 close ups have a glare, washing the color out. It measures just over 11" and sits 1 3/4" high. A wonderful piece for you, your family, or a special wedding gift.
This item is made of hand carved wood and vintage caramel wood, hand inscribed prayer, artist signed, carved wheat sheafs, european wood, varnish. The style is victorian and edwardian.
