This 11" x 9" white oak crucifix is made of wider wood stock than most other crucifixes to ensure that it stands out uniquely on your wall. These are the perfect gift for weddings, confirmations, first communions, and baptisms. These handcrafted crucifixes begin from a beautiful board of white oak that has been drying in my shop for 15 years.
The long piece is cut to about 11" and the short piece is cut to about 9". With a precision bit, i use my router to precisely cut the sides parallel to each other and route a channel in each piece so that they fit together snugly. The two pieces are glued together with titebond ii wood glue and clamped. After waiting overnight, i round over the edges with a router, then begin a comprehensive five-step sanding process using 120, 220, 320, 400, and 600 grit sandpapers to achieve a smooth surface. With a smooth surface, the next step is to add finish. For these crucifixes, i've chosen danish oil to gently highlight the natural luster of the wood. Danish oil has a oil component that penetrates into the wood's pores, helping to fill them and add strength to the surface. It also has a lacquer component, which dries hard on the surface creating a satin/semi-gloss finish. After letting the first coating dry for a couple days, i apply a second coat of danish oil and let it dry for one week.
Finally, the corpus is added using tiny wood screws. The most stressful part of the whole process is the slow and deliberate hammering of tiny, delicate nails that attach the corpus securely to the cross. This item is made of white oak and bronze, oak.
