A stunning religious textile, it has a very detailed handworked depiction of the "seeing eye of god" at the bottom center. It originates from a large and very fine collection in the champagne region of france and dates from the period of napoleon iii (1860-1870). Throughout history, the all seeing eye shows an eye often surrounded by rays of light or a glory and usually enclosed by a triangle. The triangle is a symbol of christian trinity. Bursts of light and clouds are commonly used to depict holiness, divinity, and god. The eye is generally interpreted as the eye of god watching over humanity. The very rich materials and lavish ornamentation would have only been used for an altar in a large parish. The background fabric is of gold cotton which has a gilt metallic thread alternating with each cotton strand.

The combination of the two materials result in a fabric which is thick and luscious, with reflections of sparkling gilt throughout. The border of the veil is edged with very fine lyon manufacture silk velvet (the finest silk of the period which has never been replicated since the factories shut down in the late 19th century). There are two gilt metallic braid borders framing the gold fabric. Metallic "stumpwork" (raised with padding underneath) leaves, stems and wheat sheaves are placed at the two corners. The leaves especially are a marvel of hundreds of very fine metallic threads.

The triangle is in gilt metallic thread stumpwork, as is the shape of the eye. The pupil is set with an exquisite faceted clear/blue stone enclosed by a scalloped brass frame.

The ten rays are formed of hand sewn gilt sequins. The diamond shaped background is of fine crimson lyon manufacture silk.

The eyebrow is worked in fine bouillon coiling. The backing is of red linen (replaced somewhere in the textile's history).

It measures: 20 1/2" wide x 19 3/4". It is in amazing condition; some candle wax spotting at the top right of the gold fabric.
